THE Truth
Pondering the discussion we had in class, i have had some thoughts regarding truth. One thought in particular I keep coming back to is a reflection on CS Lewis's work, "Mere Christianity", in which he speaks of a moral code we all have hardwired in us. It is not something we are taught, but it is something that is just there. This moral code is a standard by which we all judge what is fair, what is right, and what is good. Could this not be considered a singular truth? Sure, it covers a vast multitude of different situations, but it is still a moral code, a singular truth...no? Let me hear your thoughts....especially if you are familiar with Mere Christianity.

ive read a little bit of the book, but not all of it. i like the idea of that, but i have some disagreements with it as well. i believe that we all do have that moral code that he speaks of that we can use to judge situations, people and ideas. so in that sense i say that it could be a singular truth, but i think this moral code could differ slightly from culture to culture according to different laws, ideas, and backgrounds. and in that case i would say that i dont think it could necessarily be considered a singular truth.
ReplyDeleteBut that is just it, it really doesn't..at least, i dont think so. Different cultures might have different laws we think are ridiculous, ideas we think are extreme, and backgrounds so far from our own we are shocked they even exist...but the moral code i am referring to, which i read from CS Lewis's book, is one that is the same from culture to culture. There may be some slight differences as you said, but not total ones. Some examples Lewis gave were: "The feeling that you OUGHT to save someone who is drowning, being beaten, etc.; cowards who run away from battles are despised; you can lie all you want, but once you are lied to...it's not fair." While cultures have ways of responding to certain situations that are unique to their culture, i believe there is still an underlying code (past all different forms of culture) that we all have and understand, whether we acknowledge it or not, whether we listen to it or not, and it is that code which i believe is a singular truth in life.
